Sunday Snippet: Hide and Seek

Yeesh. Rough week for Star Trek fans. Chekov and Picard in the same week?? Come on, Universe. Do better and space things out a little more.

Another crazy seven days. I did vote early so that's done. Still need to order my brake parts. Time got away from me, and I had a couple of bills that needed to be paid. The glamorous life I lead, right?

Work projects continue and are going fairly smooth for now. I'm adding a few new things, and I have to prep for two calls this week. One is a new client that signed on last week and one is a potential new author. Looking forward to seeing how both calls go.

Had another limited viewing week. Too many things calling for my attention and focusing ended up taking a lot of bandwidth. Hoping to get more viewed this week. I did do two binge marathons of Death in Paradise.

I did get an episode of Marple in and thoroughly enjoyed the mystery. It got very twisty, as Christie mysteries do. Lots of fun guest stars also.

Watched the next to last Poirot and found it kind of bittersweet. Nice to see the duchess back to round out that thread. It looks like Hastings will return for the finale, and I'm looking forward to his return.

Elementary had a bit of a bombshell episode. Nice to see Sherlock and his dad sort of mend fences. Not sure how I feel about the return of a nemesis.

That's a wrap for the life update. Tonight's post is from Hide and Seek, a sexy short that makes a couple realize they should really be together.

Here's the miniblurb:

Ella Dane is an ace pilot who volunteers to test fly a new spacecraft, if only to prove Nick Fontana wrong about its possibilities. When Ella disappears during the initial run, Nick is left wondering what he'll do without Ella in his life.

And a sneaky peek…

Nick Fontana couldn't believe Ella Dane would be making a test flight. Actually … yeah, he could. Ella had more bravado than brains. Always had.
He would be the logical choice to make the inaugural run. After all, his jacket listed test pilot at the top of the chart.
But he'd flat out refused. Mainly because he never dreamed the deck crew could get the damned design to this point.
"Showed me, didn't they?"
Now he had to decide whether to take the flight himself or let her do it. Right. As if he really had an option. Ella would fly the craft. She'd believed it possible from the word go.
Not him.
He'd thought the deck chief insane when he started tossing around ideas to build a long range recon ship with cloaking capabilities. Not that Nick didn't admire the gumption or get the fact they needed something like this if they ever wanted to make it home. And that was exactly why Nick never thought the chief could pull it off.
Limited resources and personnel. How could anyone build a ship from scratch on a space carrier?
By using spare parts and creating new ones when necessary. And by begging, borrowing or bartering for whatever else they needed. Once word spread, every ship in their contingent wanted to contribute to the project. Two frigates, three destroyers, an armament supply ship, and a special attaché cabin cruiser could get very creative when challenged.
And now they had a viable ship.
Were they crazy to try a new plane? A new ship that could shield its presence would be a solid advantage. Mess with the enemy, cause confusion and chaos. But the untested craft could get Ella killed. Nick tried to picture life without her and didn't like it.
Almost on cue, her off-key whistle preceded her into quarters. She shot him a sly smirk and crossed over to her locker.
Energy rolled off her in waves. Nick's gut dropped to his toes. Eerie dread mixed with reluctant pride prodded him to make his way to her side.
He propped a shoulder against the duty lockers. "Hey, where you headed?"
Ella slid her gaze sideways and she hesitated a beat. "Gotta hit the shower then suit up. Test flight in two hours." She finished dragging her flight suit out and draped it over her arm.
Nick let out a low whistle. "Already? Wow." His lips quirked. "You can't wait to take her out, can you?" A small vein of envy curled through him.
Ella shrugged. "Why wait? We gotta see if she flies." She patted him on the chest and all but skipped from the room.
Why wait, indeed?
Dammit, he wanted in.

Happy with this one. Ella and Nick are dancing around each other, and it's fun to write.

That's it for this week. Catch everyone on the flipside.
