Sunday Snippet: The Zipper Incident

Yeah, rough week. The cold, virus, some other kind of ick from the last post definitely kicked my ass this week. I did manage one of my client calls but had to reschedule the other one. I had no voice and couldn't breathe through all the congestion. Bleh.

The good news is I'm feeling much better. I think everything kind of broke on Friday. I slept a good portion of the day on Saturday. And my head doesn't feel like it weighs ninety pounds anymore.

I got very little accomplished on my work projects last week. I got some reading done but I'll probably review to make sure I didn't miss anything in my notes. I didn't get a lot of editing completed mainly because I feared missing important things. Back to work this week at double-time.

I had an okay viewing week. Very nice to have something on in the background while I tried to focus on the few things I managed to work on.

Started with Miss Fisher's Murder Mysteries. I loved this episode because it marked the first time Jack owned his feelings for Phryne. I also love that he didn't even consider the possibility of trying to use his feelings to change her or ask her to be something she isn't. That's one of the reasons this show holds such a big place in my heart.

Caught another episode of Foyle's War. I remembered this one and appreciated how it didn't shy away from there being good and bad people and things at the beginning of the war in England.

Watched another episode of Death in Paradise. I'm warming up to Wilson and I'm enjoying how Naomi is finding her footing with him. I also love Rose and ability to stumble onto exactly what they need for the case. I'm looking forward to Wilson and Naomi digging into his mother's death, which does appear to be more than a tragic accident.

Enjoyed another episode of Poirot. I like it when the mystery isn't a murder, but it's still twisted and tricky. And I love Hastings. Just saying.

Caught another episode of Elementary. It's kind of nice to see Sherlock interested in someone so neurodivergent. Did seem weird that Joan went middle-school student on the idea, but maybe the writers were trying to show their progression? I liked the mystery with this one.

Watched another Batman Beyond. I actually didn't remember this episode so it was nice to dive into a new-to-me story.

Enjoyed another episode of Lower Decks. I might be past the hump on the annoying factor. Great to see Boimler back with the crew and I love the reason for it. I truly do enjoy the callbacks to previous series and episodes. That's so much fun.

Finished up the episode of Reacher I started last week. I'm excited to see what this season brings. I'm also trying to remember that two plus years have passed since the last time Reacher and Neaghly were together.

That's it for the life update this week. Tonight's post is from The Zipper Incident, a sexy short that nudges a couple in the right direction.

Here's the miniblurb:

Layne Donaker makes a grave error when she mistakenly uses a super adhesive on Hyde Scarlotti's zippers—all of them, including his flight suit. Hyde is beyond done with her stupid pranks and calls her out in front of the entire crew, which Layne doesn't take kindly.

And a sneaky peek…

Entering the brig cell, Layne flexed her jaw, trying to soothe the stinging burn from the punch. "Clearly, someone doesn't know how to label things correctly." Or maybe you misread the bottle because you were too drunk…
She ruthlessly squashed her internal voice.
She stomped over to the bunk and slumped down, bracing her shoulders on the wall.
Hyde followed her inside and she jerked up to a sitting position. "What the hell? Why can't you take number two?" She didn't need to share space with him right now.
Hyde only arched his brows.
Lance Corporal Janz Mayhew answered her question. "Following orders, Ensign. Apparently, the CO thinks if you're going to act like children, he'll put you in timeout until you can learn to use your words instead of throwing punches." He locked the door and turned toward the watch station, whistling a peppy tune.
Layne sighed. "Perfect." But not surprising … nothing else had gone right since yesterday's promotion celebration.
Hyde nudged her knee. "Scoot and make room."
She frowned. "Why should I?"
He gave her a long stare. "Why shouldn't you? Do you see anyplace else to sit?"
Her gaze flicked toward the toilet. If he wanted to have a seat…
Hyde growled. "Don't even. Move your ass down." He sat on the very edge and started edging closer to her.
Layne huffed out a breath. "Fine. Whatever." She slid down almost to the other edge of the bunk.
Hyde leaned back, his head resting on the wall. Layne shot him a sideways glance. She should probably apologize yet couldn't quite put one together. Guilt licked at her conscience, but she hadn't meant to completely ruin his stuff. Just her luck when one of her pranks went completely off the rails, it landed on Hyde … the last person she really wanted to harm.
Even if he made her angry.
A few minutes later, Hyde angled his head toward her. "Why are you so out of control? What's your problem?" His voice held no censure, only curiosity.
Layne shrugged. "I don't have a problem." Not one she wanted to share at the moment.
Hyde tsked. "Yeah, you do." He sat up and turned to the side. "It's being passed over for promotion, right?"
She could own that one. "A little. Even though I get it. I'm not nearly as by the book as you are." And probably never would be.
Hyde nodded. "True. But why target me?" He held her gaze. "Your time will come." He didn't have any doubt in his tone.
And didn't that turn the lick of guilt into a pretty strong flame? He truly believed she'd move up the ranks just like him. And, yeah, she would. Eventually.
But none of that actually concerned her. Not much anyway. Hyde moving on without her did.
Ugh … she had to be honest, even if she feared saying the words aloud.
She got up and paced the floor. "I don't know. Maybe because I don't want you to forget me." Or leave her behind.
Hyde rolled his eyes. "As if." He snorted.
She stopped and threw a hand out. "See … I knew you wouldn't understand." And she really didn't want to explain.
Because she only this moment realized how much the thought of losing him terrified her.

Pretty happy with how this story is coming together. I love it when feelings finally hit hard for my characters.

Sunday Snippet: Unexpected Surprise

Happy Kendrick Lamar Does the Halftime Show to all who celebrate. I'll be feasting on food that's terrible for me because that's my favorite part of this weekend.

I'm still doing small things for Tip Jar Shorts. I'm trying to get my other blogs and my author website updated with the new material and I'm looking at possible setting up immediate downloads. That's a goal and I hope I can get there. Trying to gauge interest first. I also kept up with drawing one oracle card a day and posting the results on Bluesky.

Had a fairly busy work week. I finished up a copy edit and completed a combination copy edit proofread. I also had a terrific meeting with a new client, and I'll be working on evaluating their manuscript over the next few weeks. Very exciting!

Slow week for viewing. I had a lot of distractions and couldn't focus on watching very much. I think lack of sleep played a role there. I'm trying to figure out what kind of sleep schedule I need right now.

I did get a few shows in, starting with Elementary, which ended up being a really great episode and I enjoyed it.

Also caught an episode of Batman Beyond. I'm very nostalgic for this show right now and thoroughly enjoying the rewatch.

Watched another episode of Classic Rugrats. Again, the two vignettes were new to me. Although, I think they were out of order with the rest of the season because one showed how Chas and Kira ended up with the coffee shop.

I started an episode of One Lane Bridge and should finish it up today. This show has some twists, and I enjoy those but also need to be able to focus so I don't miss important details.

That's pretty much it for the life update this week. Tonight's post is from Unexpected Surprise, a sexy short story with a fun premise.

Here's the miniblurb:

Roma Dobbs and Case Havensworth, two soldiers with a long and storied history, finally tie the knot, but keep it very low-key and don't tell anyone. Case's dad shows up without warning on their second wedding anniversary and gets an unexpected surprise—a not so new daughter-in-law.

And a sneaky peek…

Cal arched his brows. "Okay. How did that work? If you weren't going to be at the same location?"
Case's lips twisted. "Very carefully." He sent Roma a sideways glance.
She smiled. "We realized the attraction was getting deeper. Case's unit wouldn't be attached to our base much longer, so I asked him where things were headed."
Case snorted. "I said they were headed to dangerous ground." He'd never wanted anyone more than he wanted her.
Roma laughed. "I liked the sound of that."
Cal chuckled. "I'll bet you did. You always liked to go where you weren't supposed to."
Something his dad had to deal with when Roma went through basic training and drew him as her instructor. In fact, she'd met Matt through their dad.
Roma acknowledged the truth with a lift of her chin. "True. I do like to test boundaries. And I would've crossed the line if Case had been on board with the idea." She huffed out a breath. "But he played it cool and smart and wouldn't trash our careers for a quick lay."
Case shook his head. "Nope. I suggested we wait another two weeks then meet on neutral ground." He named the resort asteroid they'd agreed to. "I'll spare you the erotic details." Basically, nonstop sex for two full days.
Cal grunted. "Yeah, I think I get the picture." He cocked his head. "So, that's when you got together together?"
Roma met Case's gaze. "In a way. I figured we'd have a one-shot deal. Spend the weekend together. Get it out of our system. Go on our merry way."
Cal lips twitched. "Didn't work like that, did it?"
Roma turned her attention to Cal. "Uh-uh. Even though I didn't plan on seeing him again, we ended up making a date to meet up after Case's next temporary duty assignment."

I'm actually having a lot of fun with this sexy little short. Roma and Case are a joy to write.

That's it for this week. Catch everyone on the flipside.

Sunday Snippet: Ties Don't Bind

Time to wrap up 2024 and send it on its happy way. For me, it's been a year of ups and downs and sometimes the downs packed a punch. That said, I try to focus on the ups and pull that energy into my realm.

Wild weather, per usual. We had sixty degrees yesterday, so my husband went golfing. He's been down with a nasty cold and wanted / needed the fresh air and exercise. Today it's raining and dreary outside.

Finished up a section of a developmental edit I've been working on. So excited to have it done, because we're almost to the finish line on this story. One more chunk of chapters then a full read through and we'll be ready to go.

A semi-decent week of viewing even with the holiday thrown in this week. I still need to pick a new show to watch on one of my streamers and I finished another show and will need to replace it also.

Started season three of Elementary. I'm not sure how I feel about Harsh Joan or New Watson working with Sherlock. Also feel a bit off by Gregson's backhanded bitchslap to Sherlock. I do love that Sherlock is seeing consequences for his actions, even if they were to preserve his sobriety. Season three could prove to be interesting.

I finished The Batman series and thoroughly enjoyed the rewatch. I feel like there's at least one episode I missed, but maybe I'm remembering a different series.

Caught another episode of Classic Rugrats and didn't remember either of the vignettes. Loved the babies thinking they were helping and the grown-ups getting locked in the playpen.

Enjoyed another episode of Mr. and Mrs. Murder. I think I have two more episodes left in this series. It's a fun show and I'm glad I watched from the beginning.

Finished up the second season of London Kills and I'm excited to start season three. The weaving of the plot lines is something I really like about this series. Looking forward to seeing what happens next.

Caught another episode of Death in Paradise. Really interested to see what happens with JP. I love his character and I'll be sad to see him go, if he does.

That's pretty much it for the life update this week. Tonight's post is from Ties Don't Bind, a sexy short that brings a couple back together after big life changes.

Here's the miniblurb:

Gemma Neal, a soldier, shares a past with Tripp Macintosh and wants to reconnect with her former friend and lover. But when Tripp gets elected to a parliament position, trading fatigues for a suit and tie, she's not sure how to proceed … a foreign concept for the take-charge lieutenant.

And a sneaky peek…

Gemma smiled. Catching Tripp off guard happened to be one of her favorite pastimes. With their separate locations, she couldn’t indulge as often as she'd like anymore.
She gave him a questioning glance. "What's it look like I'm doing, Tripp?" Her fingers edged along the waistband of her pants then pushed them down so she could step out of them.
Turning, she walked toward the bed wearing nothing but his tie. She glanced back at Tripp, almost laughing at the stunned look on his face.
Sitting on the edge of the mattress, she cocked her head sideways. "You gonna join me or stand there with your mouth hanging open?"
Tripp moved fast. His pants hit the floor, and he crossed the deck in three strides. Lifting her up, he tumbled them both to the soft surface, kissing her on the way down.
His lips, her teeth, and his tongue were used to soothe, nip, and lave, fanning the flames. His hands smoothed over her skin, teasing, stroking, plying her with ease. Her fingers dug into his flesh, grasping, straining, seeking. Limbs entangled, her body fit easily with his, moving in sync like a finely tuned machine.
With her hips raised, she took him in deep and gasped his name. Gah! She'd missed him so much. Moving against her and in her, Tripp moaned in unison to his thrusts. Her head thrashing on the pillow, Gemma let the tension build until she couldn't stand it anymore. Holding his gaze, she licked her lips then raised her head to mesh her mouth with his. Her breasts tingled from the contact with his chest, and it sent her flying over the edge … with Tripp careening right behind her.
Collapsing back into the pillows, she fought to catch her breath. She wondered how it could be possible to feel exhilarated and lethargic at the same time. When Tripp landed with an exhausted thud beside her, a look of sated contentment on his face, she figured it was. Turning, she molded herself to him, hands stroking over his skin, relishing the tactile connection.
His hand came up to cup her head, fingers stroking through her hair. The rapid beat of his heart against her cheek became a soothing balm. Eyes drifting closed, she let the sound lull her into slumber.

I enjoy exploring reunions after breakup and Gemma and Tripp have been fun to write.

Sunday Snippet: Taken By Surprise

Ohio is back to being contrary with its weather. Super cold days in the teens followed by a warmup of midfifties. My sinuses hate this kind of back and forth.

Had a fairly busy work week with a new project landing in my inbox. It's one of my favorite authors to edit and proofread for. Also spent a lot of time pulling my tax stuff together. I realized last week I hadn't filed for 2023 yet. Better late than never.

Not a bad week of viewing. I didn't make a full round of my usual slate of shows, but I got most of the way through. Again, my sleep schedule is playing havoc with my brain.

Watched another episode of Mr and Mrs Murder and thoroughly enjoyed it. A lot of familiar faces in this one, which is always fun.

Caught another episode of London Kills and I'm kind of excited about Rob and Vivienne teaming up to investigate David. Of course, there's more to the story and I can't wait to find out what's really going on.

Enjoyed another episode of Death in Paradise. I'd seen most of this one but it's nice to follow the whole story from beginning to end instead of catching bits and pieces all the time.

Finished up season twenty-seven of Silent Witness. Gotta say, I really enjoyed the finale. Jack proposing to Nikki made my heart happy. And I'm interested to see what happens with Jack's place. Maybe Kara and Velvy will stay there.

Watched another episode of Elementary and enjoyed it. Still not a Mycroft fan even if he had extenuating reasons for being an ass. I am kind of glad Sherlock isn't going to throw his brother under the bus. At least I don't think he is. The next episode should reveal what will happen.

And that's it for the life update this week. Tonight's post is from Taken by Surprise, a sexy short that changes the dynamics of a friends-with-benefits couple to something more.

Here's the miniblurb:

Pales Thompson has a new man, Herrick Edwards, in her life and his birthday is coming up, but they're stuck on a ship with no R&R passes available. Pales isn't great at maintaining a relationship, but she'll take Herrick by surprise and plan a spectacular day.

And a sneaky peek…

Herrick enjoyed the view when Pales made her way out of the mess. "Damn, that was fun." Getting a little under her skin made his day.
She made pursuing her so much fun with her quirky reactions. Not that many people could read her … she had an outstanding poker face. But he paid attention and discovered quite a few of her tells. Like when her gaze lost focus, and a slight smile played around her lips? She had sex on her brain. Or when her eyes shifted color? He could guess most of her moods by the changing hues of her irises or how quickly her pupils widened.
Did he keep track of anyone else the way he did with her? "Nope." But he liked Pales, even when she got prickly.
He'd heard the stories. She rarely attempted a full-fledged relationship. The woman had terrible luck with her previous attempts. One guy couldn't keep his dick away from others. Not a problem except he'd been caught with his pants down an hour before his scheduled wedding … to Pales. Needless to say, she broke the engagement.
Another guy broke up with her when she made lieutenant before he did. Didn't matter if she had the experience and higher score on the exam. Also didn't matter they'd been together for close to two years. The asshat's ego mattered more to him than she did.
Herrick finished up his meal and stacked his tray on the pile at the wash station.
He didn't discount her reasons for being wary of getting involved with anything long-term. "But she can't go through life without a deeper connection. No one can." Okay … maybe a person could, but what did that kind of existence look like?
Lonely, for one. And, frankly, shortsighted. Living in the moment absolutely had benefits. But everyone needed a person they could count on. Whether they slept together or not.  He wanted to be that person for Pales.
He wouldn't push, but he'd be present. As up close as possible. He didn't want to spook her. But he needed to show her he'd be there, no matter what.
Because he liked so many things about her. Her sassy mouth, her total focus when flying, her ongoing feud with the XO. He quite loved everything about her. The sex became an unexpected and added bonus.
His mouth curved. "Especially when neither of us expected to hook up." At least not the first time.
A mix-up on new assigned quarters put them in the same berth. She'd pulled a double shift and appeared dead on her feet after a shower. The quartermaster either transposed the numbers or made a mistake. Either way, the card she held listed the same designation as his notification had earlier. When her shoulders slumped and she blew out a frustrated breath, he didn't have the heart to make her wake up the quartermaster to get a new rack.
He slid back against the wall and lifted his blanket. "Look, you might as well crash here. We can straighten this out after you get a solid eight." He could sleep facing the bulkhead so she didn't notice how much she affected him.
She only hesitated for a moment before she slipped beneath the covers. "Thank you." Pulling the curtain closed, she grabbed his extra pillow and got comfortable. "I owe you one. 'Night." Within a minute, her breathing deepened into sleep.
The next morning, he woke up with a start and the feel of her palm cupping his erection. She didn't say a word, but she worked his dick out of his knit boxers and moved to straddle his thighs. After pulling her hipster panties to the side, she sank over his rigid length then leaned down to mesh her lips with his. Neither lasted long, but by the time she broke and shuddered through her orgasm, he pretty much wanted to wake up every day with her wet heat surrounding his cock.
Of course he didn't say that to her.
Instead, he made it his mission to become her friend and find out if they had a chance for something else. The more he got to know her the deeper he fell. When one or both needed to scratch an itch, they found themselves together. So far, they hadn't strayed from that path. Which meant he might not stand a chance for a future with her, but he at least wanted to try.
Exiting the mess, he headed for a shift in comms. "And I aim to find out soon."

Having a lot of fun pulling this story together. Herrick likes to catch Pales off guard, but she's got a few tricks up her sleeve also.

Sunday Snippet: Matchmaker's Men

Happy Valentine week to those who celebrate. I'll throw in Galentine, friends with benefits, and all things hearts and flowers, too. February is a short but sometimes brutal month. Celebrate whatever you can.

Very busy work week with some great projects. Ran into a few glitchy things in a manuscript and that slowed my flow down. I actually enjoy that sometimes. Makes me stop and think about the story and how to suggest better changes.

Semi-decent viewing week. Made it through my shortened list of shows but had no time for my rewatch of Battlestar Galactica.

Started off with the season three opener of My Life Is Murder. Still enjoying this show so much. I think three is the last season so I'm going to savor it.

Started a new two-part Agatha Raisin. Very much enjoyed the antics of Wilkes and I'm a little bummed that Bill and Toni aren't really connecting. Also kind of wish Roy had more to do.

Watched the season twenty-five opening episode of Silent Witness. Kind of cool to see Sam Ryan again. I think this season is focused around one main case and I'm kind of excited to see where it goes. Also kind of great to see Nikki and Jack maybe get their bookmark on the same page. We'll see how that goes.

Caught another episode of Death in Paradise. Very interesting premise for this one. Enjoyed the unraveling of the case to find out who did it.

Enjoyed another episode of Elementary. I like Joan's resistance to staying with Sherlock but it would be more interesting if she actually said why she didn't want to stick around.

Watched another episode of The Batman. I'd forgotten about this one and kind of loved how Barbara figured out who Batman is then decided she had it all wrong. Fun episode.

Caught another episode of Classic Rugrats. I have vague memories of the two vignettes and rather enjoyed both.

Got another episode of The Secret Life of Amy Benson in and pretty much loved it. The story is moving along and I'm excited to get more details to her past.

That's pretty much it for the life update this week. Tonight's post is from Matchmaker's Men, a sexy short that's somewhat Valentine's adjacent.

Here's the miniblurb:

Nova Anell and Matz Yarmacher belong together, but neither wants to be the first to admit it. But when their crew mates start working behind the scenes to put Nova and Matz together, they have no choice but to face what they feel and decide what to do next.

And a sneaky peek…

Matz only wanted to ask if she understood what he meant.

He almost swallowed his tongue instead.

Nova Anell stood in front of him completely naked. No way is that a mistake.

Of course, he'd seen her nude before. The military didn't designate between sexes. A soldier either got with the program or they got pushed out. But showering after a shift didn't have the charged atmosphere of truly seeing her and taking a good, long look.

She fit his ideal picture. She had a toned physique but also had soft curves that complimented the angular lines defined by the physical toll of their work. Not perfect because why would anyone want a cookie-cutter partner. He sure didn't. He wouldn't change one thing about her.

Am I dreaming? Did the air suddenly get sucked out of the room? The pressure in his head exploded outward, filling his entire being with a combination of lust and full-on admiration. How is this really happening? And how long had he actually wanted something more with Nova?

Long enough to avoid thinking about the idea lest the universe would implode. He wondered if the deck would drop out from under him if he moved … because his luck would run in that direction. But his feet itched to challenge reality even if he woke up from whatever strange dream he lived in right now.

Unable to resist testing the theory, he slowly headed in her direction. So far, so good. No faded imagery, no obnoxious alarm buzzing to wake him, and no mushroom cloud hovering in the background.

Stopping inches away from her, he held her eyes. "You're sure?"

He needed her to understand he couldn't go back. He wanted her to be okay with the change in dynamics. There would be a lot more than a shower happening from this point onward.

Matz lifted his chin. "Be really sure…"

I love this story. It's fun to write a group of friends and colleagues pushing two people who belong with each other together.

Sunday Snippet: Founder's Day Flames (Capital City Seasons)

Well, it's been a week. I hit a slump even though I got a lot accomplished. Not sure why I ended up being so distracted, but I struggled to stay focused on anything.

Had a very slow viewing week, probably due to being randomly distracted by everything.

I watched another episode of Strangest Things and enjoyed the artifacts featured. This show makes interesting connections when they're trying to figure out what something is.

Caught a Death in Paradise marathon, which ended up being fun to watch. I'm still doing a full watch in chronological order, but fun to have a whole day of great episodes.

Enjoyed another episode of Battlestar Galactica. We finished up the first half of season two and during our discussion we remembered how long we had to wait for the next half, especially because the episode kind of ends on something of a cliffhanger. And there were so many great moments in this episode!

I planned to start Cannes Confidential this week but ended up being too distracted. I'll be watching it in the very near future and will post my reaction next week.

That's pretty much it for television this week. Tonight's post is from Founder's Day Flames, a Capital City Seasons sexy short.

Here's the mini-blurb:

An arsonist strikes Capital City, setting blazes, each more devastating than the last, on the lead up to the Founder's Day holiday, which falls on Beltane. Graham McClain is called on to analyze the firebug's actions and help get a handle on his next move. Fire captain Prima Alton reluctantly works closely with Graham and together they discover she plays a role in the culprit's twisted fantasies.

And a sneaky peek…

Captain Prima Alton pushed her way into her chief's office. "What's this I hear about bringing in some talker for our firebug?" What is there to negotiate? "We don't even know who the asshat is. Only that they're setting fires all over the quad." She dropped her cover, bill side down, onto the desk of the fire marshal.

Wade Digbee gave her a level look. "Are you questioning my decision?" He settled back, folding his arms over his chest.

Prima didn't back down even though common sense warned against her making this a bitch fest. "I discovered the pattern. This is my forte. The whole reason you brought me on board in this office." And she didn't want to share the job until she had a handle on the situation. "Why bring someone who makes compromises for a living in when we don't have anything for them to compromise on?" This shouldn't be difficult to understand.

A throat cleared behind her and a sublimely gorgeous man with dark wavy hair and lovely golden eyes moved into her line of sight. He wore a button-down shirt with the sleeves rolled up to his forearms, a pair of dark dungarees, and suede lace-up shoes with soft soles. His lips quirked into a brief disarming smile.

Which threw her a little.

Prima slid her gaze back to Wade. "I've interrupted a meeting. I'm sorry." She reached for her cover. "I'll just step out—"

Wade lifted a hand. "Don't leave, Captain. This is Graham McClain, the talker." Digbee rose and motioned for Graham to join them. "McClain isn't just a skilled negotiator, he's also a data analyst." His mouth curved into a satisfied smirk.

Because, of course, the chief would hit her with something she lived for—crunching information and details to find commonalities. Prima shot a quick look toward Graham. Looks aside, Prima stood ready to discount anything the negotiator had to say. Seriously, did he succeed by bowling people over with those incredible genes?

Wade rocked back on his heels. "We brought him in because data tends to talk to him." He managed to keep the smarmy smile to a brief flash.

Prima raised her eyebrows. "Data talks to you? I'd like to see that." She met Graham's gaze.

His lips quirked again. "The bits and bytes tend to be a little shy. You'll have to let me interpret for you." Humor filled his eyes.

She laughed, almost hating to admit she liked him. "Well, there's no time like the present." She nodded toward Wade. "Mind if we get started?"

Wade spread his hands outward. "Not at all. We need to nail this down sooner rather than later. And I'm confident you two will get the job done."

Prima motioned toward the door. "If you're ready, we can head to the situation room. I've got everything set up in there." She'd play nice and give this guy a shot.

If for no other reason than to possibly catch the firebug before anyone else got hurt … or worse.

I love this series. Graham took a while to get a handle on, but Prima started talking right away. This is a fun book to write!

That's it for this week. Catch everyone on the flipside.

Sunday Snippet: Fevered Pitch

I can't believe we're at the end of May already. The year is flying by a lot faster than I want it to. Then again, it's been busier than usual for me, so time is kind of relative right now.

Had a great week with work projects. I'm making steady progress on both and still enjoying them. It's so much fun when you love the work.

Had a somewhat limited viewing week. I'm trying to figure out the whole HBOMax is Max now and, oh, yeah, it includes Discovery+. I have both so I have to figure it all out. I won't be paying twice for the same thing.

I watched a double-header of Battlestar Galactica with the second and third episodes of season two. I can't say enough about how strong the first ten episodes are. This show rarely missed in the first two seasons.

Also caught another episode of The Brokenwood Mysteries. I have so much love for this show. It also makes me happy when people pop back up. I kind of miss a few of the original recurring characters but it's nice to have the continuity this show tries for.

Enjoyed another episode of Classic Who. I think I might have one or two left to finish out the classic run of episodes. Not sure if I'll start a new rewatch of the New Who or not, but I'm excited for the new doctor and the anniversary specials.

I'll be starting the second part of Silent Witness this week. I'm also going to change up how I do my viewing. I normally scroll through my streaming services and watch one show from each, but that hasn't been cutting it lately. I think I'll start watching whatever strikes my interest and go from there.

That's pretty much it for the life update this week. Tonight's post is from Fevered Pitch, a bonus read featuring the characters from Mia's Choice.

Here's the mini-blurb:

After six months apart, Hal and Mia are finally reunited at the new space station. But Hal is unknowingly exposed to a virulent virus and brings it along from his last planetary excursion. He succumbs to the raging illness and Mia makes a fevered pitch to her former husband to save Hal's life before she surrenders to the same infection.

And a sneaky peek…

"Well, hello, Mia. It's lovely to hear your voice."

Mia swallowed a gag at the sweet tone her ex-husband used. "Can't say the same, Fredrick. But I appreciate you taking my call." As if he didn't already expect it.

Fredrick's tone changed after her greeting. "Why did you call, Mia? I've got a full schedule today."

Mia explained the situation and added her suspicions. "I have no doubt you're behind the virus, Fredrick. This whole thing smacks of your tactics." Especially since the planetary scans were clear.

Fredrick made derisive hum. "Regardless of where the virus originated, you must truly love this Hal if you're making a call to me of all people. Especially after the last time we spoke."

And that, right there, gave Fredrick's whole game away.

Mia gave a quick answer. "Make no mistake, Fredrick. I'd call the demon who rules the underworld if it means saving Hal's life. But your scheme backfired. Hal isn't the only one who's ill. If half the station goes down there will be a full-scale investigation, which won't bode well for you."

Fredrick tsked. "Such passion. If only you'd shown some when we were married."

Mia snorted. "If only you were worthy." She waited a beat. "But you weren't. Especially considering the way you treated me. Holding my father's position over my head to use and objectify me with your friends. Switching out test results to keep him beholden to you and keep me on a short leash. Contaminating the water supply of Hal's ship to put me in my place. And none of it worked."

Fredrick countered. "It's really too bad, my dear, that you have no proof of my misdeeds. You left with nothing but my name. But you took everything that belonged to me. "

Mia smiled. "You're right. But you just confirmed every horrible thing you did on a recorded line, and I won't hesitate to broadcast to the entire universe if you don't come through." She paused a moment then hammered the final nail. "Where will your precious research grants come from if that happens?"

Fredrick snarled. "You bitch. I'll make you pay for this."

Mia shook her head. "No, you won't. Never again. You can't touch me anymore." She straightened in the seat. "And you can consider the length of our marriage as payment in full for this little favor. And you have exactly twenty-four hours to provide the formula." She ended the communication to the choked sputters of Fredrick and the cheers of Jessup Main.

This started out as a bonus read but may end up as a sexy short. The characters have things they want to accomplish and they're stretching out the word count.

Sunday Snippet: Damn the Torpedo Flu

March entered the room with some wild weather, which isn't a big surprise. Still having the back and forth chilly then warm and lots of rain and wind. I expect nothing less from my birth month.

Got a lot accomplished on my work projects. I have a new one coming in sometime in the next week or two and I'm looking forward to jumping into another new one this week.

Didn't get a lot of television watched this week, but I got a few episodes in.

Finished up The Mandalorian episode I started and thoroughly enjoyed it. My brother used to be obsessed with the sand people so it's fun to see them in action in this episode.

My Battlestar Galactica rewatch continued with "Act of Contrition." So many great moments in this episode and the acting is stellar. For a show that came out twenty years ago, I have vivid memories of watching this for the first time.

I also caught another episode of Only Murders in the Building. I kind of love where they're taking things at the moment. It'll be hard to top the first season for me, but I'm excited to see how this plays out. I'm really hoping it holds up.

That's pretty much it for the life update this week. Tonight's post is from Damn the Torpedo Flu, a sexy short that explores how a friends-with-benefits relationship goes much deeper during an outbreak of the worst flu possible.

Here's the mini-blurb:

When the torpedo flu hits the space station, Paisley and Dale are practically the last ones standing. Working through the crisis will bring them closer together, if they don't kill each other first.

And a sneaky peek…

Dale nudged Paisley back a little. "We'd better get some shut eye. Gonna be rough for a while." An understatement.

Paisley arched a brow. "My rack or yours?" She scooted off his lap and stretched.

His lips curved. "Mine." Rising, he chuckled. "See, you're already exhausted." Even if they only slept, he liked having her tucked against his side.

She bit back a yawn. "True. It's been a day and the shitty new didn't help." Walking to the hatch, she paused a moment. "I'm hoping to keep on most of the pilots in line and in the air." Crossing the threshold into the corridor, she waited for him to dog the door. "Maybe we should recommend they steer clear of the miners."

Dale fell in to step beside her. "That won't happen, but we can make the suggestion." The causeway didn't have much traffic and they made it to quarters in good time.

Paisley stopped by his bunk. "You don't think we can keep our crew from mixing with the civilians?" She stepped out of her fatigues.

Dale huffed out a breath. "Two squadrons of twenty each? The damage is probably already done." He shucked his pants, dragged his shirt off, and ducked inside the berth. "But we can minimize the fallout by making it clear contact should be kept to a minimum from this point forward." He held the blanket up for Paisley.

She finished undressing and crawled in beside him. "Dammit. I hate that you're right. Between the galley crew exposing one half and the civilians mingling with the other half … we're in for some dark days." Rolling into his side, she put her head on his shoulder.

Dale cupped her chin. "We work well in the dark." His mouth slanted over hers for a quick kiss. "But not tonight. Let's grab sleep while we can."

Paisley shuffled around, putting her back to his chest. "Right. We hit the ground running in the morning and find time for something more maybe later…"

Dale wrapped an arm around her. "Definitely."

This is a sweet moment before the ugly hits hard. Paisley and Dale will have to get creative to avoid succumbing to the nasty bug on the station.

Sunday Snippet: The Zipper Incident

Had a truly fall-weather week … to the point we had to turn the heat on. We'll probably get another brief spell of warmer temperatures before things settle down into actual fall. Or, we could have snow before Halloween. It's Ohio.

Busy work week with several projects going at the same time. I did get through a round of my usual viewing schedule.

Ted Lasso didn't disappoint with Rebecca's reveal and the catalyst for her finally making it happen ended up being so good. I rather hope Rupert dies in a fire or maybe gets hit by a double-decker bus in the near future. What a twat. Keeley continues to make me laugh out loud and I have so much love for her.

Caught another episode of The Agatha Christie Hour, which ended up being quite a fun episode even if the whole point was to gaslight one poor guy into handing over something that didn't even belong to him.

I picked up where I left of with Endeavor in season five and caught back up with the characters. I'm looking forward to more and seeing where things go.

Started a new two-part Silent Witness and thoroughly enjoyed the twists in the episode. I'm not quite sure who the culprit is and that's always fun for me.

Enjoyed another episode of Classic Who. Loved seeing Three's car pulled out of mothballs and the interactions between the brigadier and the Doctor. So much fun.

Finished up the first season of Strangest Things and I'm looking forward to the second. I love seeing how they try to figure out what the relics are and how they were used.

Started Ms. Marvel and loved the first episode. I'm very excited to dive into this series. Kamala and Bruno are awesome!

Only Murders in the Building had an awesome episode with the Superfans. Seriously, I loved so much about how everything played out. Okay, except at the end. Now I can't wait to find out what happened to the bassoonist. I have so many theories, but two stand out and I'll share if either one of those is correct.

Finished up season three of Blue Heelers and said good-bye to Wayne. I'm actually kind of glad it was indeed a random act as the episode title suggested. I'm kind of bummed out that I'll only be able to watch one more season in order then I'll have to skip to the later seasons. Streaming sucks sometimes.

Watched another MasterClass lesson with Roxane Gay. She discussed being a good literary citizen in this one and I enjoyed what she had to say. Kindness doesn't cost a red cent and being considerate of others is sometimes a lost gesture that should be the norm instead of the exception.

The Umbrella Academy had another terrific episode. I love how much chaos there is and also how the characters end up being there for each other even when they'd rather be anywhere else.

Caught an episode of Classic Rugrats and laughed out loud more than once and remembered doing the same when watching with the kiddos.

Finished off the week with Batman: The Animated Series and the introduction of the Clock King. I loved this episode when it originally aired and enjoyed it again this time around.

That's pretty much it for the life update this week. Tonight's post is from The Zipper Incident, a sexy short that takes a practical joke to a steamy conclusion.

Here's the mini-blurb:

Layne Donaker makes a grave error when she mistakenly uses a super adhesive on Hyde Scarlotti's zippers—all of them, including his flight suit. Hyde is beyond done with her stupid pranks and calls her out in front of the entire crew, which Layne doesn't take kindly.

And a sneaky peek…

Hyde loved laughing with Layne and they hadn't done any since his promotion.

He sobered. "What are you really afraid of, Layne?" He needed to have her back to her brand of normal.

She hesitated but finally answered. "That you'll move on and we'll never get a chance to well…" She motioned between them. "See if there's more here." Her cheeks flushed pink.

Finally! Progress. He'd been stupid not to see it.

He cupped her face. "Oh, Layne. There's more. There always has been."

Her eyes went wide. "Why didn't you say anything?"

He huffed out a breath. "Because you weren't ready." And pushing the idea would've blown any chance they had.

She glanced away, acknowledging the truth of that statement. Sometimes he knew her better than she knew herself.

She met his gaze again, bold and certain. "I'm ready now." Her voice held steady conviction.

He believed her. She finally figured out what she wanted. Them. Together.

His head tilted and his mouth caught hers in a steamy kiss. She moaned and slipped her tongue past his teeth. Steamy turned into something seriously hot. He could get used to this.

Keys jangled and they broke apart, each breathing a little heavier than normal. Layne's tongue flicked over her lower lip and her mouth twisted in a quirky smile. The lance corporal unlocked the cell. He only arched his eyebrow at finding them so close together.

Swinging the door open, he swept his arm out. "CO said you two can leave now … as long as you're done throwing punches."

Layne sidled past him. "Oh, we're done. We kinda worked everything out." She sent a Hyde a sideways glance.

The lance corporal smirked. "Yeah, I kinda figured." He pinned Hyde with a look. "Hang on to that one."

Hyde flashed a grin. "I intend to." He exited behind Layne and fell into step beside her.

He'd keep her as long as she wanted.

Layne and Hyde are fun characters to write. I love tipping a friendship into the something more zone.

Sunday Snippet: Zipped Lips

Welcome to spooky month! October is one of my favorite months, even if it means holiday season is hiding around the corner. So far, we've had some fall-like weather and that's making me very joyful right now.

Had a semi-decent viewing week. Work projects are ongoing and I needed some quiet time to focus on those. But I made a full circuit of my standard streaming schedule.

Once again, Ted Lasso delivered a full-on episode. I'm nervously awaiting the moment when Rebecca reveals why she really hired Ted and dying to see the fallout. Keeley rules at being a mess but not staying that way. I love how she's absolutely not afraid of Rebecca because it never occurred to her to be so. This show. It's so good.

I tried to watch the behind the scenes feature for Brokenwood Mysteries but couldn't seem to get it to play. I'll try again this week.

Started a new show and watched the first episode of Suspects. So far, I'm hooked. I enjoyed the characters and watching the case unfold.

Finished up the second half of Silent Witness and liked the twist the episode took. I kind of thought I had the right killer but the history part I didn't quite see coming.

Caught another episode of Classic Who. I'm ready for the Doctor's reunion with Leftbridge-Stewart. I'll be disappointed if it doesn't happen in the next installment.

Watched another episode of Strangest Things. This one featured the enigma machine and delved into the history of how the encryption finally got cracked.

Finished the first season of The Book of Boba Fett and I have to say, I ended up loving this show! I hope there's another season.

Enjoyed another episode of Only Murders in the Building. What a mess Oliver and Mabel got into. I can't wait to see what happens next!

Started season nine of Peak Practice. Gotta say Andrew kind of annoys me when he darts off to figure himself out. I guess it's something of a character trait with him. Loved how Joanna and Sam held the line and got through the ordeal of having their patients down with an unknown virus.

Caught another MasterClass lesson with Roxane Gay. She focused on getting published and what to expect from the traditional side of publishing and also delved a little into the small, independent presses and self-publishing. Good information.

The Umbrella Academy had a stellar episode. Pieces are falling into place and plots mixed with subplots are popping up. Allison's concern about Leonard is definitely warranted and I'm very interested in what Vanya's power is. I loved the interactions with Five and Luthor and Klaus and Diego and, of course, the standoff with ChiChi and Hazel ended up being terrific. This show is amazing.

Started season three of Star Trek: Discovery. Gotta say I'm kind of blown away. Can't wait to have Michael back with her crew and hopefully with the addition of a few more members. Excellent premiere!

Finished off the week with Batman: The Animated Series and got another episode without a feature rogue's gallery villain. I really enjoy the slice of life ones.

I'm also in the midst of watching more Resisting Roots, a Passionflix original. I might have it finished up this week, but I won't make any promises.

That's it for the life update this week. Tonight's post is from Zipped Lips, a sexy short story that got a start with a writing community prompt.

Here's the mini-blurb:

Details of intimate encounters are spilled during a rousing card game and recent hookups are brought to light, but Keavy Smart and Gresham Young have the best secret—trying to keep quiet is half the fun and zipped lips means none of the crew is the wiser.

And a sneaky peek…

Keavy stumbled into the rec area the next morning. "Why is the good coffee in here and not the mess?" After pouring a large mug, she turned to find Gresh cleaning up the mess from the previous night.

Taking a large, bracing gulp of the life-giving brew, she set the cup aside and went to assist him, grabbing a broom on the way.

He dragged the trash can around the table, scooping napkins and snack containers into the bin. Glancing up, he lifted in chin in greeting.

Keavy pulled two chairs out and shoved the broom under the table. "I'm sorry I kind of left you hanging last night." She paused a moment. "How bad did it get?" Knowing the players, she had no doubt they kept the attack going.

Gresh snorted. "Could've been worse. I only stayed for two more hands." He put the trash can back along the wall and started gathering the glasses. "They were sorely disappointed that I didn't provide any planet-shattering secrets about my sex life." He rolled his eyes and went to grab a washcloth from the sink.

Keavy's lips twitched. "Unlike Mark, Lara, and Masha. I mean, who saw that coming?" Certainly not her.

Then again, she didn't begrudge the trio or anything. In fact, she'd own being just a bit jealous. Sometimes having a healthy fantasy life really got in the way of what reality offered. She didn't want to settle for anything less than what her imagination conjured. Didn't help that her fantasy man stood less than three feet away.

Sweeping the litter from the floor into a dustpan, Keavy made a quick decision to test the waters. "Weird how we're the only two who got called out for not being loud." She dumped the trash in the bin. "Do you have a super-secret hookup spot? Or, unless I miss my guess, you really aren't hooking up with anyone right now?" Sort of like her at the moment.

She'd be thrilled if he didn't have a regular outlet. Not that he'd be short on supply. Women and men talked about him.

This is a fun romp to write. I love the vibe between Keavy and Gresh and seeing where that's going to take them.

Sunday Snippet: Zinging Barbs

I'm not quite sure where the month of September went but it's almost over. The weather in Ohio is currently fall-like. Not sure how long that will last. I could actually get behind having it stick around for a while.

Pretty decent week of viewing. I'm back on my usual schedule for the most part. I'll be starting a new show on one of my streamers, but I'm not sure if I'll stick with it or give up that slot for now.

Watched another episode of Ted Lasso. Gotta say, I definitely see the appeal and how so many people have utter undying love for the show. I'm thoroughly enjoying it.

Caught another episode of the Agatha Christie Hour. I loved the twists and turns in this one. Good intrigue without being a full-blown mystery.

Enjoyed the first part of Silent Witness. There's a good mysterious vibe in this two-parter and I'm looking forward to seeing how it plays out this week.

Started season twenty-six of Classic Who and loved seeing the colonel back again. I'm looking forward to the next episode.

Watched another Strangest Things episode and learned about desert glass. Well worth the view for that alone.

Caught an episode of The Book of Boba Fett. Geez, a lot happened and I'm still trying to process everything. Definitely need to catch up on season two of The Mandalorian to fill in the missing blanks. Looking forward to doing that.

Only Murders in the Building is such a terrific show. The pacing is excellent and the reveals are pretty much perfect. Hat tip to all involved in the writing and acting.

Enjoyed another episode of Blue Heelers and it actually ended up breaking my heart a little. One of the scenes hit a little too close for comfort involving a pet that had to be put to sleep.

Caught another MasterClass lesson with Roxane Gay. She discussed finding an agent and what to pay attention to when dealing with contracts.

Watched another Umbrella Academy episode. I'm definitely getting hooked on this one. I love the characters and how they interact with each other and outsiders. Klaus is a wicked-fun gem. Also nice to see Luther before his transformation. Felt horrible for Diego and my heart really goes out to Vanya. Loved the scene with Allison, though. Great stuff.

Enjoyed two more episodes of Classic Rugrats. Two of my favorites were in this bunch. Anytime Angelica is foiled by Susie is worth the watch.

Also caught another episode of Batman: The Animated Series. This ended up being a good one. I like the episodes when there isn't a major villain from the rogue gallery for Batman to deal with.

That's pretty much it for the life update this week. Tonight's post is from Zinging Barbs, a sexy short that got a start with a writing community prompt.

Here's the mini-blurb:

Reagan Bruce won't slow down, not even when she's seven months pregnant and Ian Flannigan decides to walk away from competing to keep Reagan healthy. The couple exchanges some zinging barbs until they work out their issues.

And a sneaky peek…

Ian took his anger, worry, and frustration out on the punching bag, glad he had the gym to himself. "How do I get her to see reason?" He wouldn't do what she did to him—push every button he had until he finally pushed back.

He jabbed the bag. "She made me lose control and follow my instincts." And now he had a shot at being a champion racer for the Skye Dawgs.

Maybe he should take his concern to the Bruce. No. Reagan's dad ran the Dawgs but he'd never, ever been able to run her.

He added a kick to the heavy bag. "I don't want to risk losing her." The sked races were notoriously dangerous and Reagan wouldn't be confined to the spectator area.

Why the hell did he get tangled up with her?

Punch, punch, kick. "Because I love her, dammit." Even when she pissed him off so much he couldn't be near her.

The door to the training room creaked open but he didn't stop his workout. No doubt, Reagan had tracked him down.

She paused by the row of lockers. "Wish that was my face?" Her hand rubbed over her stomach.

He still didn't stop. "Nope." He wished he could explain how much he loved her and wanted her to listen to the doctor.

Reagan slowly walked around the perimeter of the gym, her other hand massaging the small of her back. "You know, I've always loved watching you spar."

He kept pounding the bag, unwilling to engage right now. He still had too much anger to work through.

Reagan didn't let his silence deter her. "The play of muscle, the sound of your gloves connecting with their object, the rhythm of your feet on the floor." She sighed. "Poetry in motion, Ian." She waited a beat. "And it makes me so damn hot for you I can't stand it." She stopped behind him.

He stopped, turned, and stared. Is she serious right now?

She shrugged. "I know, right? But I knew I was a goner when I first watched you in the ring with my dad." She moved closer. "And I'm still a goner now." She sent him a wry smile. "A crazy, hormonal, utterly in love with you goner."

This little peek into how Reagan and Ian deal with a disagreement is so much fun to write. The novella that gets them together begged for a bit of a follow-up.
