Sunday Snippet: Escape on Equinox

I'm looking forward to seeing the end of May. It hasn't been a bad month or anything. It's nice to feel like I'm starting with a clean slate.

We've had some rainy weather but it's keeping the temperatures mild, which I love. Really hoping the cooler weather sticks around for another week or two. I have some yard and garden work I want to do.

Work ended up being pretty okay. I still have the wordsmithing author making changes, but I think the project manager is putting a stop to that. Hopefully, we'll be able to get the proofread over the finish line. I'll be finishing up the science book proofread this week. And I have a copy edit that should finish sometime tonight or tomorrow. It's the twisty mystery thriller and it's definitely been a wild ride.

Not a bad week for viewing. I got through my usual list of shows but didn't end up adding any of my reserve ones.

Started out by finishing up the episode of Foyle's War. I have one episode left then some bonus material to watch.

Caught another episode of Brokenwood Mysteries and quite enjoyed it. Very interesting to see Mike move house and how the transition worked into the case.

Finished up the second part of Silent Witness. Super happy to see Jack accepted as a professor. Also rather liked the resolution of the case.

Enjoyed an episode of Poirot. Always fun when he's kind of on his own. The case was very interesting also. I like it when he's solving old ones.

Elementary ended on an interesting note. I'm wondering if the mention of Sherlock's dad is going to come into play for the second half. Also fun to see Kitty again.

Watched an episode of Young Justice and I'm intrigued. The addition of Artemis could prove interesting. I'm leaning toward double agent.

Caught another episode of Star Trek Lower Decks. Fun to see Boimler handle his first away mission. Also really fun to watch the other three try to outsmart their superior officers.

That's pretty much it for the life update this week. Tonight's post is from Escape on Equinox, a novella in the Capital City Seasons series.

Here's the miniblurb:

Jim Hodges, an elite officer in a specialized tactical unit, finally meets a woman with a sweet disposition and a naughty sense of humor. But when she's taken hostage and his team is called in, he's determined to make sure a quick resolution takes place, which won't be easy because he's ordered to step aside and let his fellow members handle everything.

And a sneaky peek…

Roz gave a cautious answer. "Uh, yeah. I'd like to do something." She hesitated on being specific. "Can I call when I finish up? Maybe see what we have time for?" Hedging gave her a little wiggle room.
Jim nodded. "Sure. And no pressure. If you have a shit day and want to postpone, we can." He took a large gulp of his coffee. "Gonna hit the shower. I left a go cup on the counter. Help yourself before you leave." Setting his mug on the nightstand, he headed for the bathroom.
Roz stopped him by clasping his forearm. "You're seriously too good to me." She leaned up and brushed her lips over his. "Thanks for not pushing."
Jim wrapped his arms around her. "Not my thing. You know that." His mouth briefly melded over hers. "Let me know what you decide." He started back toward the bath.
Roz ducked out of the bedroom, hit the kitchen, and poured more coffee into the disposable cup. Placing the cap on, she grabbed her bag and headed out to her car … waiting for the fear to settle in.
Except it didn't.
Her gut didn't churn the way it used to after her ugly split from Walter Heinz aka Walter the wacko.
Sliding inside her vehicle, she started the engine. "Not sure split can be considered the right word." They hadn't really dated.
They spent one weekend together, and Roz didn't like the vibe. She turned Walter down when he asked her out again, thinking that would be the last she'd see him. I was so wrong. For six months, he'd stalked her. To the point, she'd finally moved to another province.
She figured that would be the end of things. Nope. For three more years, he found her no matter where she went. He finally got arrested when he tried to kidnap her. He now served a mandatory fifteen years because he had a weapon.
Merging into Capital City traffic, her lips quirked. "Now, Jim. I liked the sparks from the word go." And considering she'd more or less jumped him at their second meeting … probably a good thing.
Her mind spun back to the moment she'd run out of the hospital after a harrowing experience in the emergency department. She spied Jim coming out of the administrative hub and a burst of adrenaline collided with the array of emotions rolling through her and she didn't think. She reacted and knew exactly what she wanted.
Jim caught sight of her and headed in her direction. "Roz, hi. Are you okay?"
No. Not at all.
She grabbed Jim and shoved him into a supply closet in the parking garage. "Not really. Just lost a patient." And the death hit her hard.
The cold weight of loss settled over her like a shroud.
She had his pants undone and cock out before he could think straight. Didn't take him long to catch up. He yanked his shirttail free and undid the buttons.
He asked one question. "You sure this is gonna help?"
Her head bobbed up and down. "I need to feel warm again. I can't stand the cold I'm feeling right now."
He didn't waste time. He covered her mouth with his and used his tongue to tease and tantalize. They didn't have a lot of room, but he lifted her up on the small counter and cupped her ass.
Hard and ready, he asked one more time. "You're sure?"
She gave him a jerky nod. "Please, Jim. Now." She couldn't say or do anything else.
Jim lifted his chin and slid her scrub bottoms down and flung them over his shoulder. He slid her panties to one side and thrust forward, going deep. She came alive, her nerve endings humming and her blood pumping through her veins. With every push of his hips, she rose higher from the frozen depths of despair to the heated ceiling of the passionate encounter.
Reaching out, she grabbed the sides of his shirt and hauled him closer, her mouth crashing against his. His lips blazed a path along her jawline up to her ear. She shivered when he bit down lightly on the lobe.
His breath fanned against her skin. "This is intense and I'm not gonna last long." His voice rasped. "You gonna come for me, Roz?"
Her core tightened and he groaned, his pace kicking up a notch.
Roz gasped. "So close. Just a little … more." Her heels dug into his ass.
His head dropped to her shoulder. His hips surged forward and he ground against her. The extra bit of friction sent her over the edge and she shuddered through an orgasm.
His breath hissed between his teeth and he followed her over, his arms going taut to stay upright.
Roz blinked to clear the pinpoints behind her eyelids and looked into his hooded gaze.
She unwrapped wobbly legs from around him and pulled her scrubs from his shoulder.
Holding them to her chest, she whispered, "Thank you." When he eased back and away from her, she slid down to her feet.
Instead of feeling as awkward as she should, she had a buzzing energy flowing through her. Stepping into her pants, she smiled. Bizarre place aside, having sex with Jim might have been the best she'd ever experienced.

I love this series so much and I really need to finish up the three books to finish out the quad series.

That's it for this week. Catch everyone on the flipside.

Sunday Snippet: The Baracas File

Yeesh. We're already halfway through the month and I have barely scratched the surface on holiday stuff. In all fairness, I'm not really feeling it this year. There's just too much terrible going on from mass shootings to the kidnapping of people off the streets. Good will toward man doesn't seem to be a thing anymore … unless it's a specific type of man.

Ohio is super cold and snowy right now. We got about six inches last night and the temperature plummeted down to single digits. It's in the teens at the moment. Won't last long. We're supposed to be in the mid-fifties by Thursday. Seriously.

Work projects are moving along. I'm finishing up a proofread and working on a copy edit. I have another new project getting ready to start soon and another copy edit coming next week. I also have the memoir that I'm reviewing as the author makes changes.

I got a few of my regular shows watched this week. I'm still in a blah place and haven't been able to dedicate the time to viewing. I did get a good bit of my mountain of laundry completed, which is a huge accomplishment. I have a new hanging rack I want to get set up but can't until I get the backlog of clothes cleared.

I did finish up Foyle's War and will be starting a new season this week. The next one only has two episodes, which means they might be a little longer. If that's the case, I might be breaking the episodes into two chunks.

I also got the season finale of Beyond Paradise in. I wanted to get it watched before the holiday special and I got it done. Really hope there's some good stuff around the corner for Esther and Archie. My fingers are crossed. Also … Martha and Humphrey are really great foster parents. It hurts my heart every time they send one of their fosters back.

In an odd twist, I caught a holiday episode of Poirot. Thoroughly enjoyed the mystery even without Hastings and Miss Lemon or Inspector Japp. Gotta say the Egyptian prince being a complete prat ended up being fun to watch. I would not have blamed Poirot if he lost his calm and thwacked that guy on the head.

That's it for the life update this week. Tonight's post is from The Baracas File, a novella that takes the main characters on a twisty journey to find justice. This is a tie-in to the Furlough 99 universe.

Here's the miniblurb:

Briggs Felderzon, an investigative reporter, will stop at nothing to discover what's in the Baracas File, the contents of which results in his brother's death. Myrrh Golz, his brother's partner in the Inter-Stellar Police, decides to help him … but Briggs isn't sure he trusts her.

And a sneaky peek…

Briggs let the ISP handle the arrangements for his brother's death. No … not death. Murder. The ceremony and wake would take place later today.
And Briggs had research to do, if he wanted to get answers.
But putting his current workload on the back burner pissed his boss off.
Briggs cut into his editor's tirade. "Fuck off, Andy. You do remember I just lost my brother, right?" Asshole behavior wouldn't get the guy a story … not when a bigger one took up every inch of Briggs's brain.
Andy's breath hissed out. "Shit. Yeah. Yeah, you're right." He paused and heaved a sigh. "Take whatever time you need. I'll move the trafficking story over to Carson."
Briggs shook his head. "Andy? Do me a favor. Leave it with me…" A huge ask but…
Andy all but salivated over the phone line. "You've got a feeling, don't you?"
Briggs couldn't explain his reticence—gut instinct, a weird vibe, or just sheer ego—but, yeah, something made him reluctant to let the thread go. "I don't know what the fuck I have. Yet. Give me some leeway and if nothing pans out, I'll send my notes to Carson." The other reporter would do an adequate job … if necessary.
Andy grunted. "Yeah, okay. And listen, my apologies for being a dick. I'm sorry about your brother." He signed off after extending his condolences again.
Briggs leaned back and let a little of the grief slide in. He'd been out of touch with Zell for weeks, but they'd been close. Briggs chased down stories about corruption and greed; Zell chased criminals that committed major crimes. Sometimes their professional paths crossed, but often they didn't have time to make personal connections.
The weight of that fact settled over Briggs. "Who did this to you, Zell?" And you need to keep watch for Myrrh
Sitting up, Briggs grabbed his laptop and started digging for information on his brother's partner.
Two hours later, he had the basic details any cursory search would come up with … and quite a bit more the general public wouldn't be able to get their hands on.
Closing his computer, he exhaled on a long, slow breath. "Looks like I need to have a chat with Myrrh Golz. And she better have some good answers for my questions."
Starting with whether she killed my brother

This one might end up going in a direction I didn't expect, but I love it when that happens.

Sunday Snippet: One Hot Mess

Happy US Mother's Day to those who celebrate. For those with parental issues, I hope you find joy and peace.

Had the rare experience of seeing the northern lights in Ohio. I can honestly say I haven't been so excited about something in a long time. The mysteries of space are awesome!

Fairly busy week with work projects and other odds and ends. Finished up a couple of manuscripts and started a new one. I have another ongoing developmental edit that I need to dive back into this week.

Not a bad week of viewing even with a few distractions. I'm at a weird place with watching right now. I'm kind of leaning toward doing binge marathons again and I'm not sure I want to fall down that rabbit hole again.

Caught two episodes of Suspects and enjoyed both. This show is kind of choppy and that adds something to the experience. I love the cases and how things are rarely what they seem from the initial starting point.

Finished up the third season of Madame Blanc Mysteries. I'd love to see another series of this show. The cast is a lot of fun.

Watched two episodes of Silent Witness. I've realized that after the next one, I'm completely caught up with the show. I really like the current cast and I'm excited to see what the next season brings.

Enjoyed an episode of Death in Paradise. This is one I hadn't seen before and I liked the case. I'm also enjoying Jack's tenure as DI.

I think I finished out the first season of Elementary. I'm actually thrilled with how the Moriarity plot played out. I love seeing Joan kind of step in to the role of consulting detective with ease and grace. The things she sees that Sherlock doesn't is always interesting.

Watched another episode of The Batman. Nice to see Ethan back again. I'm a little bummed we haven't seen Chen for a while and I can't remember if she comes back or not.

Enjoyed the Valentine episode of Classic Rugrats. I do remember this one but not everything about it. Nice to see some longer length episodes also.

That's pretty much it for the life update this week. Tonight's post is from One Hot Mess, a novella that brings a couple together after a night of revelry.

Here's the miniblurb:

Eva Twine and Van Jefferson have a very friendly rivalry when their teams compete for the galaxy championship. But when Van questions what Eva will wear to the celebratory masquerade, she decides to rock his very foundation.

And a sneaky peek…

Van Jefferson stood under a blast of steaming water, letting it work the kinks out of his shoulders. The Interplanetary Police Force battle of the precincts ended on a high note for him. His squadron from Venus took top honors.

Knocked the Mars crew down a peg.

No easy feat, the team from the red planet had won the battle five years running and the rivalry, while friendly, finally took a step in the right direction. Van shut off the shower and stepped out of the stall. About damn time. If he had to listen to Eva Twine cackle and crow about winning again he'd have lost his mind.

The woman made him insane. And usually not in a good way. Even though he found her wildly attractive. She also frustrated the life out of him sometimes.

The creak of a door and an off-key humming sound alerted him to someone's presence.

Speak of the devil.

Eva sauntered into the head—how she could do that with an injured foot, he'd never understand—and started stripping off her clothes.

"If you give me a few, you can have the place to yourself." Van walked into the changing area and pried open his locker.

Eva smirked and shoved her pants past her hips. "I kinda have to hurry. Doc took an x-ray and gave me fifteen to get showered and back to the infirmary." Her fingers slid under the waistband of her panties. "If you can't handle the show, you'd better leave now."

Right. He'd go hang out in the quadrant wearing a towel so she could shower. Not likely.

He raised a brow. "I doubt you have anything I haven't seen before." He reached for his shirt.

Eva chuckled and tugged her tank over her head. "Good to know." She crisscrossed her arms and pulled her sports bra off, giving him her back as she turned. "Congrats on the victory, by the way. They carted me out before I had a chance to say anything."

Van waited a beat, thinking she'd add a snarky insult to the compliment. She glanced over her shoulder, one eyebrow arched.

He nodded. "Thanks."

She grabbed a towel and flung it over around her neck. "You headed out or sticking around for the festivities?"

The IPF planned a huge masquerade to top off the week. All participants in the battle automatically received invitations.

Van grinned. "I'm staying. My chief informed us if anyone tried to beg off, he'd bust us all back to beat cop."

Eva snorted. "That would suck balls." Grabbing her kit she headed toward the showers. "Guess I'll see you there then. Don't forget your costume." She called back over her shoulder. "Remember no beat cop uniforms allowed."

Van chuckled. "I've got it covered." He grabbed his pants. "You?"

She turned the water on and let it heat up. "Oh yeah. No worries."

He couldn't resist. "Let me guess? You're gonna show up as a sky hawg rider." His gaze slid to her discarded tank, the logo of the sky cycle manufacturer emblazoned across the front.

Eva's smirked again. "Ha-ha." She stepped under the spray of water. "Get out of here. I'm down to seven minutes."

Effectively dismissed, Van finished dressing and exited the head. The exchange with Eva had gone better than he'd hoped. Defeat had toned down her brash bravado.

Or maybe pain did. He'd noticed she'd favored her injured foot when she stepped under the water. He hoped it wouldn't keep her from the party.

This story took on a life of its own and I'm happy it did. Eva and Van are so much fun!

Sunday Snippet: Understanding Truth

Well… I appear to be almost over the cold from hell. The scratchy throat from last week lasted about three days and then it all went to my chest. Those mucus busting tablets work wonders for clearing out the crud and getting lots of sleep helped a ton. I think I'm on the road to recovery, so yay!

I'm still behind on my regular viewing shows but I did catch the episode "The Icicle Cometh" on The Flash. Actually quite enjoyed that one.

Caught another episode of The Sarah Conner Chronicles. My Crackle app started misbehaving and I finally got it back to usable form. I'm about halfway through the second season now.

I have one episode left of series thirteen of Midsomer Murders. Looking forward to starting the next one. Also caught episode nine of Babylon 5. I'd forgotten how truly remarkable the first season of B5 ended up being.

Watched another episode of Birds of Prey. I think I have five left. That show was a little ahead of its time. If they shot it now, it would probably be well-received. Also started a rewatch of Roswell. If the new reboot gets picked up, I want to have the memory of the original in my mind. Not sure they'll be able to pull off a decent new show.

Caught episodes of Pensacola Wings of Gold and Lexx. I've discovered I'm not as fond of Lexx on my rewatch. The episodes are very hit and miss.

Caught a few more episodes of Classic Who and started the fifth episode of Doctor Who's new season.

That's pretty much it for television this week. Tonight's post is from Understanding Truth, a novella that started with a writing community prompt of writing a story that involves a lie. I put a bit of a different spin on it, but I'm hoping it works well.

Here's the mini-blurb:

Perdix Plane and Brock Halliwell are soldiers who finally understand a few simple truths. They're not normal people, they don’t follow standard operating procedure, and they'll never have a conventional relationship—and maybe that's perfectly okay.

And a sneaky peek…

Perdix hovered outside the Brock's alcove. She paced. Back and forth. Back and forth.
Heaving a sigh, she paused. "Why can't anyone give me a simple update?" At least let her know if he might be awake.
She could grill him about his wound and fill him in on Jonesett's condition. The asshole would live. Unfortunately.
Dammit. Her frustration warred with the knowledge of what seeing Brock down and bleeding did to her. The very idea she could've lost him hit hard. Way harder than it should have.
She started pacing again. "We're not a couple anymore." Her fault because she let past failed relationships guide her current ones.
But, dammit, she cared about him so much more than she realized.
The medic that brought him in rounded the corner and stopped short. "TS Plane? What are you still doing here?" She grabbed a clipboard off the side of the wall.
Perdix almost pounced on the woman. "What's his status? Is he awake?" She stopped talking, dragging in a deep breath.
She'd get answers if she gave the medic, Jess Able—according to her name tag—time to respond.
Jess's eyebrow quirked. "Are you family?"
Perdix rolled her eyes. "You know I'm not. He's a colleague and I'm the one who shot him. Cut me a break here, will you."
Jess put the chart back and folded her arms over her chest. "He's not awake and won't be for at least an hour. We're getting ready to move him for a procedure but he'll be back in his alcove as soon as we're done." She relaxed a little, unfolded her arms, and placed a palm on Perdix's shoulder. "Why don't you get cleaned up, grab a shower or something, then come back?" Her gaze swept over Perdix when she spoke.
Perdix didn't want to leave but caught the medic's meaning. She had Brock's blood on her and probably looked like a wreck.
Nodding, she accepted the advice. A shower actually sounded damned good.
Once home and under the water, Perdix replayed every moment of the fizzle out end with Brock. He accused her of letting her demons haunt her. The demons being the shitty guys she'd spent time with before meeting Brock on the job.
"You're always caught up with your ghosts, Perdix. There's no room for anything else." He'd shaken his head in disgust. "You exhaust yourself in the past because it's easier than dealing with the present or looking toward the future."
She'd refused to believe he might be onto something. But she had to admit he nailed her modus operandi.
Man, Brock has it right. I do better with my ghosts, always playing the would've, could've, should've game.
A truth she finally understood. "Living in the here and now is so much harder."
She thought about the hard fact all the way back to the hospital. Maybe the time had come to start facing life and stop living moment to moment. And she wanted to move forward with Brock.
Another truth that took her way too long to admit.
While approaching his alcove, voices carried in low tones out to the hallway. She peeked around the corner, not wanting to disturb the doctors if they were examining him. But doctors didn't greet her. Instead, Dionne McNair, a perky little dispatcher, sat at Brock's bedside, pretty much hanging on his every word. She'd heard whispers about Brock going out with her. And, dammit, they'd be great together.
Perdix ducked back, slumping against the wall outside his space. "Shit." Another truth slammed into her.
He's gonna move on. Without me.
The bit of truth followed right behind.
It's better this way. I'm not good for him.
Hadn't she proven that by shooting him?
And the idea Dionne would be perfect for Brock, being there for him, taking care of him after he got home, blah, blah, blah… really smacked Perdix in the face.
And she faced the first truth of living in the present.
It hurt to let him go.
And admitting to the pain might be the hardest thing she did.
Squaring her shoulders, she stepped away from the wall and started to head right back out the way she came in. Luck not being on her side, she knocked a rolling stool in the corridor. Shit. Glancing up, she got pinned by Brock's gaze before she made a hasty retreat.
He called her name. "Perdix. Hey, wait."
Dammit. No quietly getting out of life.
Drawing in a deep breath, she entered his alcove and nodded toward Dionne.
Brock shifted his position, rubbing directly below the wound area. "Did you need something?"
What to do? She definitely couldn't be honest. She didn't have the balls to own the reason she truly came. So… big lie time.
She shook her head. "Nah. I stopped in to check on Jonesett and figured I'd come down on my way out." How lame did that sound? "Looks like you're in good hands, so I'm gonna head out." Turning, she waved over her shoulder. "Take care, Brock."
Once outside the hospital, she let out the breath she'd been holding and made the short trek across the parking lot to make a hasty retreat. Blindly merging into traffic, she drove on autopilot and ended up at her favorite watering hole, The Pissing Pig.
Her lips curved and she snorted. "Perfect. Best place on Mars to get over myself."

I'm pretty excited to see where this one goes. I like having an established couple go through something like a breakup then find their way back to each other.

That's it for this week. Catch everyone on the flipside.

Sunday Snippet: One Hot Mess

Slow week in television due to the Olympics, but that's okay. I enjoy being a casual viewer of the coverage and there have been some terrific events. Watching Virture | Mior during ice dancing is such a joy. They're unmatched by anyone else.

Legends of Tomorrow returned on Monday and while I'm kind of "meh" about the move to a new night, I did love the episode. Nice to see the group dealing with Firestorm being gone. Also kind of cool to see Mick step into something of a leadership role, even if he'd never own doing it. LOL

I had the chance to catch up on my period dramas. Murdoch Mysteries is having some fun with Julia's pregnancy and I kind of like how she's dealing with everything. Frankie Drake Mysteries keeps getting better. I love the varied types of cases Frankie and Trudy get involved in.

Also caught another five episodes of Chicago Fire. Season four is diving into things on a much deeper level and I like where the characters are right now. It's been fun watching Severide pull himself back up from his demotion. I even sort of enjoyed Patterson figuring out what really matters at fifty-one. Not sure I'm totally down with him becoming a battalion chief but, yeah, I can live with it. LOL

I didn't get the chance to watch more of The Punisher, but I'll be catching some episodes this weekend. Also still need to watch the latest Riverdale before the show returns after the Olympics.

That's it for television this week. Tonight's post is from One Hot Mess, a novella that started with an idea of a character waking up next to someone and not remembering how they got there. Oh… and they're naked.

Here's the mini-blurb:

Eva Twine and Van Jefferson have a very friendly rivalry when their teams compete for the galaxy championship. But when Van questions what Eva will wear to the celebratory masquerade, she decides to rock his very foundation.

And a sneaky peek…

Eva soaped up her skin, the hot steam of the shower easing her aching muscles. Her foot throbbed and she kept most of her weight off that side. Made the shower go must faster than normal.
She lathered up her hair and shook her head. Leave it to Van to assume she'd show up as a Sky Hawg poster girl. And okay… that might have been her original plan, but not anymore.
Something about the sexy smirk on his face made her want to wipe it off in a spectacular fashion. "Oh, Van, you think you know me… but you so don't." Eva let several ideas roll around in her head.
She had to find something killer to wear for the costume ball. A dress. A gorgeous one. Ugh… and heels. She didn't wear them often, who liked to torture themselves? But her legs looked kick ass great when she did.
Hopefully her foot didn't have any broken bones. The universe would not be that cruel. She had a point to make. Her team might have lost the battle, but she had a chance to beat Van by proving his expectations so very wrong.
She laughed. "How effing awesome? Kinda like kismet for the big loss."
Shutting off the water, Eva quickly toweled off and pulled on some clothes. She had to check in with the infirmary doc and see what the x-ray showed. Head still full of ideas, Eva started down the corridor, oblivious to anyone else passing by. She favored her injured foot, but cut a quick path through the throngs of people and burned a steady trail toward the lower level. Making her way down the steps, she made a quick decision to do the heels even if her foot had broken bones. At least until Van got a good, long look at her. Grinning wide, she made the turn and entered the infirmary.
She couldn't wait to get the all clear… "Geez, it's been years passed since I've actually wanted to go shopping." The exorbitant amount she'd spend didn't irritate her either.
She firmly decided not to examine the reason why Van Jefferson inspired so much competitiveness she'd go to great lengths to show him up. The challenge of rocking his world a fun one she deserved after taking one for the team.
Laughing, she sat up on the exam table and waited for the doc. "Poor guy won't know what hit him."

Eva and Van are on the path to something more… who knows if it'll work out but they'll have fun testing the waters.

That's it for this week. Catch everyone on the flipside.
