Sunday Snippet: Wires Crossed

Had a super busy week between work projects and personal projects and, whew, I'm exhausted. Also, the weather is being contrary with lots of rain and chilly temperatures. I don't think we got above sixty degrees with the exception of Thursday when we topped out at seventy.

I'm still juggling six work projects but two are in a state of simmering on the back burner, which isn't optimal, but it does help manage the load.

Had a slow viewing week and didn't quite make it through my usual round of shows. Too much going on that needed my full attention.

I did end up catching an episode of Miss Fisher's Murder Mysteries. It's one of my favorites with Phyrne showing off her flying skills.

Also watched an episode of The Brokenwood Mysteries. A holiday episode that I thoroughly enjoyed. I'm kind of bummed there aren't any new episodes until the next season.

Death in Paradise kind of blew my mind. I knew what would happen and it still caught me a little off guard. I think because Neville acted so out of character. I have a really good idea of who killed the professor, and I hope I prove myself right.

Got another episode of Return to Paradise viewed and I'm really enjoying this show. I'm very on the fence with Glen's engagement to Daisy. I really think things could get very messy.

Finished out the week with another Poirot episode. I kind of pegged who the kidnapper was from the beginning, and I loved the razor-sharp way Poirot called the guy out.

That's pretty much it for the life update this week. Tonight's post is from Wires Crossed, a novella that pulls a couple who don't see eye to eye together to work their issues out before someone gets hurt.

Here's the miniblurb:

Vanessa Twill and Justin Hardwick don't always see eye to eye and the tension between them is thick and taut. When a training exercise goes bad, the duo is grounded until they get their act together. Forced to communicate, they work out some issues and realize they didn't have their wires crossed … a saboteur did. Literally.

And a sneaky peek…

Chastised and humbled, Vanessa never wanted to face another stinging rebuke from the CO. But she needed to know what the hell happened? Staying angry obviously wouldn't help.
Justin didn't offer any discussion, but he couldn't be happy with being grounded either. One of them would have to break through the wall of silence they'd erected between them. And waiting wouldn't get them any closer to being back out in the black.
Vanessa ventured a comment first. "Why did you change the plan?" She kept her tone quiet and non-accusing. "I honestly thought you followed orders to a painful level." Which often annoyed her.
Justin stopped a moment. "I didn't change the scenario. And I tried to tell you before the CO grounded us." He raked a hand through his hair. "I mean, think about it. When would I have had the time?" He started forward again. "I thought you altered the game plan." Frustration came through his voice but no heat.
She stopped and grasped his arm. "If you didn't and I didn't. Then…" Her stomach churned with something nasty and bitter.
Justin frowned. "Who did?"
Vanessa gave a nod. "Obviously someone and that's a problem." A big, huge shiny one.
She ducked into a small conference room and dragged Justin in behind her. They didn't need an audience right now. Or eavesdroppers.
Her voice lowered. "Look, we've had our wires crossed in the past … are you sure you didn't decide we should run option C?"
Justin folded his arms over his chest. "I'm sure. You said A. I didn't agree, but I let it slide. Like you said, I follow orders." His eyes narrowed. "No matter how painful the level is."
Yeah, okay. She probably deserved to have her words handed right back to her.
Vanessa sighed. "Well, I didn't like option B so no way would I have changed it—not even to spite you." And definitely not to put their recruits in danger.
Justin lifted his chin. "Which brings us back to who did and how we ended up with such a cluster fuck?"
Yeah, she wanted to get whoever tampered with their scenarios alone for five minutes. But they had to figure out the who and how part first.
Vanessa met his gaze. "How do you wanna go about this? Should we work together?" It would save time, but she wouldn't blame him if he didn't want to be anywhere near her.
His eyebrows arched. "You're asking?" He relaxed his stance and propped a hip against the conference table.
Vanessa nodded. "Well, yeah. This affects both of us. I mean, I want answers now, but that might not happen if we're both poking around on our own … so…" She shrugged. "If we coordinate our efforts…"
Justin finished her thought. "We'll smoke out whoever made the change, and hopefully do it before they can cover their tracks." His head bobbed up and down. "Yeah, we figure it out together." He thrust his hand forward.
Vanessa's lips quirked and she clasped his palm. "Together." She squeezed his fingers then let go. "I have a maintenance shift to get to, but I'll be free later." She hoped he'd have time to get started today.
Justin grunted. "I'll find you. Since I'm free, I'll ask around and put some feelers out." He pushed away from the table and headed for the hatch but paused before leaving. "We'll get to the bottom of this." He held her gaze a long moment then exited the room.
Vanessa had a new appreciation for Justin. Because she believed they absolutely would solve the puzzle of what happened.

Here's to the beginning of a new path forward for Vanessa and Justin. This one is very fun to write.

Sunday Snippet: Wires Crossed

We had some rain that gave us mild temperatures, which I thoroughly enjoyed. I don't mind hot weather but there's something about being able to be outside with a nice breeze and sunshine that makes me happy.

Solid work week. Had a few small projects that I cleared off my desk and had a new one arrive in my inbox. My plates seem to be spinning nicely at the moment.

Good week of viewing. I did the same thing as last week and only tried for one round of my usual streaming services. I might be adding one more to the list after talking to my sibling. He made some good recommendations.

Watched another episode of The Snoopy Show. This one had a vignette on using the library and happiness being a good book. I feel that sentiment all the way to my toes.

Caught another episode of Signora Volpe. I love this show. I truly hope there will be another series because there's only one episode left.

Viewed the first of a two-part Silent Witness and ended up being very intrigued. Very much looking forward to the second part of this one.

Enjoyed the second part of a Classic Who arc. It's nice to see a familiar face from a previous incarnation. The third part will be the end of this season, I think. I'm not sure if there's another one after this. If not, I'll be starting a new show before I dive into New Who.

Watched another episode of Most Terrifying Places in America. I'm fascinated by the legend and lore revealed in the sequences. I'm not sure I'd be cool with trying to stay somewhere that's known for being haunted but I love hearing about the stories.

Caught another episode of The Mandalorian. Gotta say I'm thoroughly enjoying this show. The pacing is excellent and I'm excited to see what happens next.

Viewed another episode of Harrow and I truly dislike the new boss. I'm also not thrilled with Grace's ex being in town. If there's another season and things get really convoluted, I'm done. As much as I love the cases, I don't want the other drama.

Enjoyed another episode of Blue Heelers. I liked seeing how another country handles the wildfires that tend to rage at the worst possible time. Not really into the whole taking the hospital hostage thing, mainly because the two characters are a little too over the top for me. We'll see how the second part goes this week.

Started a new MasterClass with Roxane Gay. I'm very much looking forward to her lessons.

Watched another Babysitter's Club and thoroughly enjoyed the episode. It's nice to see more of the sibling relationships and the way the parents interact.

Viewed two more episodes of Classic Rugrats. One was a favorite and the other was one I thoroughly enjoy.

Caught another episode of Chicago Med and discovered something I didn't know about one of the Chicago Fire characters. Good information. Also can't wait for Nat to discover she's being completely gaslit by her new fiancé. Here's hoping the fallout from that doesn't do too much damage.

Started the PassionFlix movie Tangled and I'm having fun watching it. I didn't know if I'd like this one but I'm so glad I'm watching.

That's pretty much it for the life update this week. Tonight's post is from Wires Crossed, a novella that got a start with a writing community prompt.

Here's the mini-blurb:

Vanessa Twill and Justin Hardwick don't always see eye to eye and the tension between them is thick and taut. When a training exercise goes bad, the duo is grounded until they get their act together. Forced to communicate, they work out some issues and realize they didn't have their wires crossed … a saboteur did. Literally.

And a sneaky peek…

Justin exited the medbay and headed for the hangar deck. He'd built up a heady steam of anger and needed an outlet.

He spotted Vanessa coming in through the hatch of the briefing room and unloaded on her. "Five. Five trainees are injured. What the hell happened out there, Vanessa?" Her bullshit about hearing he'd changed the action plan didn't sit well with him.

Vanessa came rushing toward him. "You know what happened. Half the class got a last-minute update—from you." Her voice rose and several members of the deck crew looked their way.

His jaw clenched. "I told you, I didn't make an adjustment. We agreed on option A and I had no reason to change it." Even if he didn't care for that scenario.

Her mouth dropped open. "And you think I did? I'm the one that wanted option A in the first place. I wouldn't go with—"

"Enough!" The CO's voice echoed through the room. "You two. My quarters. Now." He didn't wait for a response, stalking out of the briefing area with quick steps.

Vanessa followed directly beside Justin, neither willing to give an inch. The angry tension stretched taut between them and didn't dissipate when they knocked shoulders entering the colonel's quarters. Justin finally conceded briefly and turned to the side until they were through the opening.

The colonel moved behind his desk. "Sit, both of you." He paced back and forth. "A shouting match that can be heard on the entire deck? I expect better from you." He paused, placing his hands on the surface. "You're both grounded and out of training rotation until you get your shit together." He yanked his chair out and sat down. "This juvenile back and forth is ridiculous. I'm ordering you two to stop pointing fingers at each other for this latest debacle. I don't care who did what. The cost of your stupidity is three downed birds and five of your trainees on the injured list. You're not flying again until you're on the same page." His tone became terse and clipped. "I've had it with both of you and I don't want to see or hear from either of you until you have your issues worked out." He paused a moment. "For real this time."

Vanessa shrank a little in the chair and Justin resisted the urge to hunch his shoulders forward. The blistering setdown stung—probably because they deserved it. The heat traveling up his neck had more to do with letting the colonel down than still being angry with Vanessa. Being mad wouldn't fix their situation.

The colonel waved a hand. "You're dismissed. Don't let me see or hear another argument. Got it?"

Justin stood and gave a nod.

Vanessa lifted her chin. "Yes, sir." She got to her feet and headed for the hatch.

Justin followed this time … he had to find a way to reach through the shroud of distrust and get to the truth.

This story has a little intrigue and I have fun writing it. Vanessa and Justin will end up finding some common ground once they get out their own way.

Sunday Snippet: Wires Crossed

Man… another week full of crazy sauce. In all honesty, I could do with a bit of slowing down and a tiny amount of smooth sailing. That said… I won't hold my breath. And it's not like anything majorly negative is going on. It's only being busier than I normally am.

Not a bad week in television. My current obsession with Roswell, New Mexico continues and I rewatched the first nine episodes. This week's episode didn't disappoint and my conspiracy theory side is having a heyday about the fourth alien. I'm such a big fan of how… messy… the relationships are. Awkward interactions abound and I'm totally here for watching all that unfold. So far, I'm also a big fan of how those touchy moments are being portrayed. I love how the core characters are letting the subtext shine and mixing it with lots of snark and offbeat comments. This show… if you're not watching it, give it a whirl. You won't be disappointed.

Caught another episode of Murdoch Mysteries and loved how the show title got worked into the book William and Julia are writing. It makes me wonder if the twelfth season might be the last. If so, I'll fondly say goodbye and look forward to rewatching from the start.

Watched the Arrow "Unmasked" episode and thoroughly enjoyed. I should be to the point where I can catch up on the crossover event with The Flash and Supergirl. I'm behind on The Flash but, sadly, I don't miss it as much as I thought I would.

Caught a great episode of Painkiller Jane. I remembered this one and enjoyed the second viewing. I actually wouldn't mind a reboot or reimagining of this concept at some point.

Started from the beginning of Peter Gunn and watched the first two episodes. I finally found another streaming source that has all of the first season episodes. This is such a great show to watch when the mood to write noir strikes me.

Watched another episode of Underbelly: Razor. Things move fast in this series and I kind of enjoyed watching Kate get served even when she did the right thing. Communication would go a long way in her world. Tillie and Nellie are probably next and I'll look forward to seeing how the cracks and chips start showing in their armor too.

Caught one of my favorite episodes of The Sarah Conner Chronicles. I truly loved how Jessie's gambit finally got revealed and the sole purpose she brought Riley back to the past came into play. And I also liked how Derek is finally edging toward knowing they're working at cross purposes. Good stuff.

Watched the final episode of Birds of Prey and I'm glad I took the time to rewatch this single season show. The last scene is more than worth watching the entire series for.

Started the sixth episode of Strike Back's sixth season. Gotta say the Mac and Wyatt interactions are terrific in this episode. Also love Coltrane's bits so far. I really want to see him rip into the DEA agent for blowing their cover. He's too smart not to know she had a big ass hand in doing that.

And that's it for this television this week. Tonight's post is from Wires Crossed, a novella that got a start with a writing community prompt of writing a scene where a training exercise goes wrong.

Here's the mini-blurb:

Vanessa Twill and Justin Hardwick don't always see eye to eye and the tension between them is thick and taut. When a training exercise goes bad, the duo is grounded until they get their act together. Forced to communicate, they work out some issues and realize they didn't have their wires crossed… a saboteur did. Literally.

And a sneaky peek…

Justin grabbed hold of Vanessa's shoulder. "Hold up, Twill. Care to explain why you were all over Red Hen's ass?" He tucked his helmet under his arm and braced his legs.
She sighed and jerked her head toward the briefing room. He didn't necessarily want to be alone with her. Not right now. Red-hot irritation chafed at him but he followed her inside the darkened room.
She turned and folded her arms across her chest. "Because I had the XO in my face as soon as I landed. His words were, and I quote, 'that was a little too close for comfort' and 'let's make sure it doesn't happen again.'" Her hard look underscored her next words. "Didn't have the heart, or frankly, the balls, to tell him Red Hen isn't mine, but he tagged me in front of everyone. Didn't have much choice but to tear Hernandez a new one." Her brow quirked upward, daring him to push back.
He couldn't. At least not on that point. But he did have an issue with a few things she'd berated the junior pilot over.
Setting his helmet in one of the chairs, he matched her cross-armed stance. "Did you have to tell him how much ejections cost?" Seriously? Not the thing pilots want to hear when they've just lost a plane.
She made a garbled choking sound. "Why the hell shouldn't I? You do realize it's part of our training budget, right?" Flinging an arm out, she started pacing back and forth. "I mean, you're a numbers guy, aren't you? Always pulling random statistics out of your ass to make a point." Her eyes rolled and she paused.
His face heated, but he gave a nod. "Statistics don't lie." They were the foundation the military built almost everything on.
Vanessa snorted. "Maybe not, but they can be manipulated. Which is why developing good instincts makes better pilots." A phrase she repeated almost ad nauseam.
Justin waved his hand. "Instinct only carries them so far. Practice, repeating the same exercises over and over, builds muscle memory and hones fine motor skill." And, yes, he had a stack of reports that backed his statement up.
Which Vanessa would know.
She sighed. "Look, you're awfully comfortable taking chances with multibillion-dollar space crafts, but I'm not as blasé about the bottom line." Dropping into one of the seats, she slumped down and kicked her feet out. "Or about training our pilots in the fine art of flying them correctly so they don't have to eject."
Okay, ouch. Vanessa didn't usually bring out the bitch card so early in a discussion. Then again, she rarely ended up on the XO's shit list either.
But… Justin had a semi-ready comeback. "The planes don't actually cost billions to make. The government factors in the lifetime of use, the pay grades of the flight crew and pilots, the officers in the comms, hell, everything it takes to fly in the price they list for public review." The planes cost maybe two million to source and produce, tops. "As for the fine art of training, we've surpassed our counterparts on five other ships. I think we're doing something right." Even if they argued incessantly about their methods.
Vanessa's lips quirked in a half-smile. "Okay, there is that." She got up and met his gaze. "Look, it got hairy out there today and I'm still processing everything. I stand by what I said to Red Hen but if you want to smooth things over, I don't have any objections."
As far as concessions went, he'd take the peace offering.
Shaking his head, he grabbed his helmet again. "Nah. You gave him a lot to think about. We'll start fresh tomorrow and see how he handles being back out there." He thrust his free hand forward. "Thanks for explaining."
She grasped his palm. "Sure. Let's hope today's fiasco is used by everyone when we get back out there."
He could've done without the reminder but she made a fair point. And he'd wisely keep his mouth shut for now.
With a quick lift of his chin, he stepped out of the briefing room. "They're doing some kind of buffet for dinner tonight. Wanna join me?" Maybe if they spent some downtime together, they'd make some headway and argue less often.
She tilted her head to one side. "I'd like that. But I have a sim session scheduled with Catnap. Can we meet afterward?"
He agreed and actually looked forward to seeing how they got along outside of their usual roles.

I'm enjoying how Vanessa and Justin are interacting and how both make good, solid arguments for their point of view.

That's it for this week. Catch everyone on the flipside.

Sunday Snippet: Wires Crossed

Argh!!! The Flash, Arrow, and Agents of SHIELD left off at cliffhangery moments. But what awesome episodes!!! I have lots and lots of thoughts, but won't share here for the sake of saving some space. LOL

Haven has one more week and will end on a double episode. I truly hope it ends well, mainly because I've been with the show since the very beginning.

The Librarians and Agent X are still entertaining me. I really enjoyed last week's Agent X and can't wait to see what happens this week. Gotta say the actor playing the foil in last week's episode is making the rounds. He's been on a lot of shows I've been watching.

Looking forward to Agent Carter coming soon. I love the format and the entire cast of characters. Can't wait.

That's it for the TV roundup this week.

Tonight's post is from Wires Crossed, a novella where my main characters have a ton of conflict to work through.

Vanessa Twill sat in the cockpit, watching her trainee perform a difficult series of maneuvers. "Nice job, Catnap. A little rough on the ending sequence though." She typed in a brief report on the comm screen. "I want you to spend an extra hour or two in the simulator this week."
Catnap, also known as Catherine Napali, replied, "Copy that, Lieutenant." She flew around and got into formation with the other trainees.
The next cadet flew out, not one of hers, and Vanessa settled in for a few minutes of relaxation.
"Hey, Van. Your newb made some sloppy mistakes out there." Justin Hardwick broke into the radio silence on a ship-to-ship call.
Her counterpart in training often drove her mad with snide comments and too many helpful suggestions. They rarely saw eye-to-eye on teaching techniques. From the moment they'd met, they'd been at each other's throats over the right way to whip the new squadron into shape.
Vanessa flipped over to Justin's frequency. "She didn't do anything a few extra sessions in the simulator won't iron out." And some extra attention from Vanessa.
Justin's snort crackled over the radio. "She should go back out there and run the sequence three more times. Correct the mistake while she's making it."
Vanessa rolled her eyes. Justin's answer to any and all busted moves—repeat the exercise three times or more. If they didn't run the risk of damaging multibillion dollar spacecrafts, she might go along with the stupid idea.
She went to respond but her radar panel lit up like a pleasure casino. The squawk of everyone speaking at once had her cutting the main comms to drown out the noise and hopefully help the pilot in distress. Justin's candidate spun wildly and she stayed quiet while Justin calmly tried to talk him through the procedure to get back on track. When he failed, he had no other option but to have the kid get clear of the plane.
"Red Hen, eject, eject, eject." Justin's voice rang out, loud and clear, over the line.
Vanessa sucked in a harsh breath and held it, hoping like hell the kid remembered the location of the trigger mechanism. A second and a half later, the panel blew and the seat shot up and out of the plane, which continued to spiral out of control. Vanessa slowly exhaled, her heart beating a rapid staccato. She ordered the trainees back to the ship and led the formation to the hangar deck. Justin stayed behind, waiting on the SAR transport to come out and pick Rafe Hernandez, Red Hen, up.
Coming to a smooth landing, she popped the canopy of her bird and removed her helmet. Rising up, she looked around for the deck hand that she normally handed her equipment off to, but met the angry gaze of the XO, instead.
He shook his head. "That one was a little too close for comfort, Lieutenant. Let's make sure it doesn't happen again."
Slumping back down into the cockpit, Vanessa closed her eyes and counted to ten. They were lucky no one got hurt and Rafe remembered his training. But she'd give Rafe an earful when he got back in.
Justin and Vanessa have many a battle to fight and most of them are up hill.

That's it for this week. Catch everyone on the flipside.
